The ancient Inca settlement of Pisac is located at the eastern end of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, one hour from Cusco. It is located at the bottom of the valley, on a mountain behind the present town of Pisac, existing since colonial times. It is one of the best Inca archaeological sites in Peru.

Some historians claim that the name Pisac derives from the word “pisaca” meaning partridge, and it is possible that the vast agricultural terraces on the mountain slopes represent the wings of the partridge. Near the main structures, at the top, you will find the largest known Inca cemetery in existence, which in turn, is the largest ancient cemetery in South America.

How to get from the town of Pisac to the ancient Inca town?

You can take the ascent from the town of Pisac, by a hidden access road that leads to the back and then to the mountainside where the Inca village is located or you can call a cab, it will take you by the back to the ruins. You can board them from the main road, they charge between 30 and 35 soles (US$ 10 – 12). It will take about 15 to 20 minutes to get there.

To enter the archaeological complex of Pisac you will need the Cusco Tourist Ticket; you can purchase the general ticket, which includes 16 of the most impressive sites in Cusco, or purchase only the “Partial Tourist Ticket Circuit 3” (Archaeological Sites of the Sacred Valley of the Incas). In case of using a cab to go up to the archaeological site of Pisac, be sure to agree on the price before boarding.

The trail

Once at the site, you will have to make your way through the tourist buses that are parked – stuck – in a small parking lot at the beginning of the archaeological park. You will arrive at a set of wide agricultural terraces that descend the mountainside. Take the road to the right, you will see an Inca urban settlement known as Q’alla Q’asa situated above you on the mountainside; you will also see ceremonial springs fed by an intricate network of stone canals, and the Inca cemetery – the largest ancient burial ground in South America – on an adjacent hillside.

Continue along the path that hugs the mountainside, after a few hundred meters you will enter through a beautiful lithic gate, this marks the entrance to the main temple complex, you will have stunning views of the left side, the undulating path continues up the mountainside before reaching a narrow tunnel. Coming out of the small tunnel you will get the first image of a small residence and agricultural area on the lower left, often referred to as Pisaca or Q’allaqasa; from here you will continue for 10 minutes to the main temple of the ancient Inca city of Pisac.

The constructions of the ancient village of Pisac, are among the few that can prepare you for what you will see in Machu Picchu, or those that are at your height, if you have already seen the wonder. Situated on a small ledge with beautiful panoramic views from both sides, the complex is composed of a dozen buildings built with pink granite stones exquisitely “carved”, although molded would be the more accurate term.

The Temple of the Sun with an Intihuatana (sundial) as its centerpiece, has a curved back wall and a straight front wall, similar to a letter D; the temple is perfectly aligned to the sun and marks with incredible precision the summer and winter solstices. The narrow water channels, the exquisite work in its stones, the altars and wells found reflect its spiritual importance and sacred character.

Downhill

From the incredible complex of the Temple of the Sun you can continue descending to a point where you can see how the three valleys surrounding Pisac converge. An optional trail continues – uphill – to a rocky outcrop where other buildings and watchtowers are attached to the mountainside. If you don’t feel like climbing, a trail just beyond the complex leaves in the direction of the urban sector. The many terraced levels that literally drop off the mountainside will give you the opportunity to take in unique views.

This is one of the best times to take some time and rest. The trail will continue for another 20 minutes before connecting with a wide path, which descends gently to the village of Pisac.

Degree of difficulty and travel time

This hike is recommended for almost anyone, as long as you have the desire to see some of the most amazing constructions of what was once the empire of the Incas. Most of the trail will be downhill, except for the first 20 minutes, which undulates up and down. Most of the trail goes along the edge of the mountain so we do not recommend hiking with small children, but if you do, take them by the hand and keep an eye on them.

It will take between 1 ½ and 2 hours to complete the trek from the top of the mountain to the Pisac market in the town square. However, as you can imagine, the time may vary depending on the pace at which you walk, how long you stop at each of the places you want, and how much time you take to rest.

• Take a small bottle of water with you, it is possible to find vendors before entering the site, but you cannot count on them being there.
• We recommend you to wear hiking shoes, it is the most appropriate footwear for this hike.
• Be sure to bring sun protection! The hike is quite exposed, and you will end up with sunburn if you don’t protect yourself.
• Walking sticks are still allowed in Pisac, take 1 or 2 “if you need them”. Remember that you will not be able to use them in Machu Picchu.
• Although the road is well marked, they may have forgotten to mark some places; if you are not sure which way to go, remember that the mountain should remain almost at all times on your right, this does not get lost.
• The rainy season runs from November to March, so if you visit during this time be prepared to get wet. Rain usually falls in the afternoons, so we recommend doing the hike in the morning. However, it can rain at any time of the year.
• If you do not buy the General Cusco Tourist Ticket, we recommend you to buy at least the Partial Ticket – Circuit 3 (Archaeological Sites of the Sacred Valley); remember that buying the entrance tickets for each of the sites separately can be much more expensive.
• The Pisac Archaeological Park is open every day of the year from 7 am to 6 pm.

And it is not difficult to succumb to the charms of this place, moreover, in recent years has had a universal pull massively attracting followers of the new era and people from around the world who decided to make Pisac their home. It is a magnet for spiritual seekers. You can find everything from yoga retreats, to sessions with guided hallucinogenic natural medicine, with plants such as Ayahuasca and Chakruna.

But in Pisac there is more, an ancient Inca city on top of the mountains behind the village, and a world famous market.

The colonial town of Pisac

It is located 33 km from Cusco, is reached by a paved road and is where the guided tours of the Sacred Valley of the Incas begin. Founded in 1570 by Viceroy Toledo, the city of Pisac is located in an original Inca settlement. Strategically built along the Urubamba River, the town has grown to cover much of the valley floor on both sides of the river. The oldest buildings of the town are located around a central plaza with a pisonay tree in the middle, from where all the central streets start.

The world famous Pisac market is held every day, although it is on Sundays when it is completely filled with traders and visitors from all over. The stalls are spread out in the main plaza and extend down the sloping streets to the foot of the mountain; literally hundreds of individual stalls, stretching the length and breadth of the plaza and continuing into the adjoining streets. Although many of the vendors sell similar products, such as alpaca wool fabrics and handicrafts, there are some stalls that sell unique and quality products, ideal for a great souvenir of this beautiful town.

One of the most fun parts of shopping in this quaint market and what you should be prepared for is negotiating for your purchases; asking for a discount and agreeing on a price is part of the buying process.

The ancient Inca village of Pisac is located in the mountains behind the colonial town. Situated on the mountain slopes, it is a must-see for anyone who wants to tour the Sacred Valley, or if you are on your way to Machu Picchu. However, it is unknown to most tourists. If you want to experience something different, be sure to include the hike to the ancient Inca city of Pisac in your itinerary.

This ancient Inca settlement is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Peru, and one of the best previews of what you will see at Machu Picchu. Many researchers suggest that the name Pisac derives from the Quechua (language of the Incas) word “Pisaca”, which means partridge, and that the wings of the bird are represented by the vast agricultural terraces.

In Pisac (Inca) you can see the largest and oldest Inca cemetery in South America, a residential settlement and ceremonial baths; down the mountain is the temple complex, exquisitely carved in pink granite; it has a temple of the Sun, ceremonial altars, water channels and wells. A few meters further down you can see a beautiful urban area, surrounded by agricultural terraces that intermingle with the natural curvatures of the mountain landscape.

How to visit Pisac?

To enter the ruins of Pisac or any other while touring the Sacred Valley, you will need to have in your possession the Cusco tourist ticket. The partial ticket – Circuit 3 “Sacred Valley Archaeological Sites”, includes archaeological sites in Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Moray.

Most people visit the site as part of a group, which includes a guide who will take you through the Inca city of Pisac, with free time to tour the colonial town and the Pisac market. It is possible to get a different history of Pisac from different guides, and it is great fun to compare it with the stories of others.

The tour of the amazing Inca constructions of Pisac will take you between 2 and 3 hours; you will walk from the town square to the ancient Inca village at the top of the mountain. However, a less strenuous way to visit the archaeological site is to take a cab from the village and go around the back of the mountain, along a road that will take you to the top, touring the ruins from this place will take about 2 hours.

If you have time, we recommend spending at least a full day in Pisac, its market and its magnificent Inca constructions. You can include the restaurant in the organized tour and we will choose it for you, or you can see your options. Although they will be quite limited; there are some country restaurants on the way out, around the plaza there are also some good restaurants offering a varied menu.

Ollantaytambo

In the Sacred Valley of the Incas you can let your thoughts wander, with the beauty of the snow-capped Andes and green mountains brushing against the clouds. Ollantaytambo is an ancient Inca city located just at the end of the valley; it served as a sort of checkpoint before being able to enter the Inca city of Machu Picchu.

It is a fortified city, with temples, residences, terraces, canals (still in use today), etc. Its structures were built with the same detail with which the Inca city of Machu Picchu was built. However, some scholars of Inca culture believe that it is more of a pre-Inca city. But that is not the only amazing thing about Ollantaytambo, A few years ago it was discovered that the ancient Inca city is aligned with some of the most amazing ancient sites in the world.

The town of Ollantaytambo is the place where you will board the trains to Machu Picchu. The colonial town is very beautiful, there are dozens of restaurants and lodgings, and you can see how the water channels that belonged to the Inca people circulate through its streets.

Pisac

Pisac (or Písaq) is a Quechua word meaning “partridge” and like the cities of Cusco (shaped like a puma) and Machu Picchu (shaped like a condor), it is shaped like a partridge, the animal from which it gets its name. In Inca times, the partridge was related to values and spirituality; and it still is today, since the town of Pisac is the spiritual center of the Sacred Valley. People from all over the world make spiritual retreats of all kinds in this small but cosmopolitan town in the Andes.

The constructions of the ancient Inca settlement of Pisac offer Inca constructions, comparable only to those that can be seen in Machu Picchu, the best terraces in the valley, and the largest ancient cemetery in South America.

But Pisac is not only ancient Inca constructions but also a colonial town, whose main square is the space where one of the most famous handicraft markets in the world is located; in it you can see people from nearby communities, with typical costumes of the Andean valley, skirts (polleras) of bright colors, wool caps (chullos) or woven hats, ponchos and monsters, selling their products; handicrafts, textiles, jewelry, food, etc.. We recommend you to take with you baby alpaca garments, they are very fine and cost less than the ones you can find in the handicraft markets of Cusco city.

“The square is the place where one of the most genuine handicraft markets of Peru is installed. The people who sell here, in general, are the same people who make the products. The current town, at the foot of the mountain where the Inca village is located, has become a point of attraction for spiritual tourism. Vegetarian and vegan restaurants abound; but you can also find this food in improvised stalls, set up inside the market (the plaza). It is one of the places you have to see if you are in Cusco.“
