If you visit Machu Picchu in high tourist season (from April to October), do not forget to bring with you: light sports clothing, comfortable shoes, hat, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, rehydrating water, snacks, fruits and everything in a comfortable backpack.

  • 8) Does the entrance to Machu Picchu increase in price in high tourist season?

The price of tickets during the high season will not have a price increase. What may increase costs are the other services necessary to visit Machu Picchu. For example, hotels, transportation and the like.

  • 9) Do train tickets to Machu Picchu also have to be bought in advance during high tourist season?

Yes, train tickets are just as important as the entrance fees to Machu Picchu. During peak tourist season (June through October), it’s recommended to purchase them approximately two months in advance.

  • 10) What is the best month of the year to visit Machu Picchu?

The best months to visit Machu Picchu are June, July and August. Although these are the months with the most tourists (high tourist season), you can get photos of the Inca citadel without danger of fog. In addition, in June Cusco celebrates important festivals such as the Inti Raymi.

Advice from people who have been there

Machu Picchu

Lucy B.By: Lucy B.

“Book train tickets as soon as possible“

“I was in Machu Picchu a few days ago, it was fabulous, but we had a problem, we already had Machu Picchu tickets, but we could not book train tickets on time (we forgot), even though it was not high season; We had to enter Machu Picchu through an alternate route through a town called Santa María. So if you are reading this; I would not risk it again. Buy the train tickets in advance or book the trip to Machu Picchu with an agency, it costs a little more, but you will be sure that you will be able to enter Machu Picchu.“

I like the history of the Incas

You are looking to learn about every detail, vestige and peculiarity of the Incas. The best option is to take a tour inside the Inca citadel. This way you can appreciate in detail the architecture used , the designs they took into account and the importance of the temples. The tickets that allow you to do this activity are:

  • Machu Picchu Classic Circuit or Designed Classic (Route 2A).
  • Machu Picchu Classic Circuit or Lower Terrace (Route 2B).
  • Machu Picchu Temples Lower Part or Designed Royalty (Route 3B).
  • The Inca Trail route 2 or 4 days.
  • Hiking route from Choquequirao to Machu Picchu.

I’m making the trip alone

If you are traveling alone, you can do any of the activities. However, if you are looking to do the Inca Trail route, remember that you will not be able to do the route during the month of February. Likewise, we leave you some recommendations so that your trip is special and completely safe.

  • Make your reservation for your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu in advance.
  • Inform your family members about your itinerary or travel plans for the day.
  • Communicate with your family or trusted people and tell them about the adventure.
  • Find out about the activities that are carried out to get to Machu Picchu.
  • It will also be important to plan your activities properly before making the trip to Machu Picchu.

Other recommendations

  • The tour organization requires that Machu tickets must be booked in advance; however, if you want to have the summit of Huayna Picchu in your Machu Picchu experience, then you will have to book the ticket weeks in advance. If you want to come during the high season (June, July, August) then we recommend booking months in advance, otherwise you may not be able to choose from all the available tickets.
  • In no case should you look for a path on your own or cross the security lines. Machu Picchu was designed to be inaccessible, so looking for a path on your own is a big mistake, which could cause damage to your safety, and even worse if you do it while hiking on the Huayna Picchu mountain.
  • Many choose the dry season to come to Machu Picchu, but Machu Picchu is just as impressive in the sun as it is in the rain. In fact, the rainy season offers some of the most exuberant landscapes in Machu Picchu, and allows you to explore the Inca city as much as possible on your own. And that’s pretty much more than you can ask for in a place like Machu Picchu.
  • When you come to Machu Picchu you should be prepared for rain; the area can go from bright sunshine to torrential rain in just a few minutes, so bring waterproof clothing no matter what time of year you come. Also protect your skin from the sun and insects.
  • You can choose to take one of the buses to go up from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, but you can also do it on foot. Or mix it up, get on the bus and walk back down; however, if you are going to tour any of the mountains of Machu Picchu, we recommend taking the bus, as you don’t want to be tired in Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu

Rocío S.By: Rocío S.

“The ruins of the world“

“Machu Picchu is one of the best places in the world, it is impossible not to be overwhelmed by such a display of grandeur, especially because of the place they chose for it. In reality, it should matter very little what time of year you come, whether the weather is good or not, if you have the opportunity to come to Machu Picchu, do it, it is an essential trip. The rest of Peru is also very beautiful, its food is great, but there is nothing like Machu Picchu.“

Guide to buying your Machu Picchu tickets online

You can purchase tickets to Machu Picchu online or directly in Cusco. However, if you wait until you arrive in Peru to purchase your tickets, you run the risk of not finding them available.

To purchase Machu Picchu admission tickets online, follow these steps:

  • Visit the website of an authorized travel agency. (Make sure it’s an official travel agency.)
  • All websites offering tickets to Machu Picchu have an availability calendar, so be sure to check if there are still any available tickets.
  • If you find availability, click “Reserve” and fill in your personal information. Check carefully that your ID (or passport) number is entered correctly.
  • Check if you qualify for one of the discounts (for minors, university students, and tourists from the CAN (Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia). Pay for your ticket with a credit or debit card (usually Visa or MasterCard).
  • You’ll receive your Machu Picchu ticket in your email inbox (PDF); print it and present it along with your ID or passport on the day of your visit to the Inca city. Check your spam folder in case the ticket arrived there.

Guide to buying your tickets to Machu Picchu in Cusco

You can purchase entrance tickets to Machu Picchu online, or you can also purchase them in person in Cusco, or even in the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). This option may be a good fit if you purchase them during the low tourist season (January, February, and March), three, four, or five days before your visit.

To purchase tickets to Machu Picchu in person in Cusco, follow these steps:

  • Make the trip to the city of Cusco (first on a flight to Lima and then another flight to Cusco).
  • After checking into your hotel, make sure to visit one of the authorized ticket offices: at 340 Maruri Street and 210 Garcilaso Avenue. Both are located in the historic center of Cusco.
  • Request a ticket for your preferred time slot. Check availability. If you find available tickets, purchase your ticket. If you don’t find availability, look for another type of ticket and time slot that does have available seats.
  • Check if you qualify for one of the discounts (for minors, university students, and tourists from the CAN: Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia).
  • Pay for your ticket with a credit or debit card (usually Visa or MasterCard). You can also pay with cash.

You will receive your printed Machu Picchu ticket. You can also request to receive your ticket in your email inbox.

Can I get tickets to Machu Picchu in person in the town of Aguas Calientes?
Tickets to Machu Picchu can also be purchased in person in the town of Aguas Calientes, also known as Machupicchu Pueblo due to its proximity to the Machu Picchu archaeological site (just 10 kilometers away). Authorities from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture have made available 1,000 tickets that can be purchased in person in this town. Tickets can be purchased at the Ministry of Culture offices, right in the main plaza. Due to the large number of visitors seeking these tickets, there is a 2- to 3-hour line. Some visitors even need to register to purchase their tickets the following day. This option is not recommended, as there is a risk of no availability.

Guide to buying your Machu Picchu tickets during the peak tourist season

  • To preserve Machu Picchu, the Peruvian government has placed limits on the number of people who can enter the Inca city each day.
  • For this reason, each type of Machu Picchu ticket has a limited number of entries. To ensure availability, you must purchase tickets in advance.
  • June through October is peak tourist season in Machu Picchu, so tickets should be booked well in advance.
  • The Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu (Route 3A) ticket is the most difficult to obtain, as only 350 tickets are available daily. During peak tourist season, it’s recommended to purchase tickets three to four months in advance.
  • Additionally, the ‘Machu Picchu Classic or Designed Classic Circuit (Route 2A)’ and ‘Machu Picchu Classic or Lower Terrace Circuit (Route 2B)’ tickets are the most popular, as they allow for classic photos and a tour of the site’s main stone structures (Temple of the Sun, Main Temple, Temple of the Three Windows, Sacred Rock, Temple of the Condor, Water Fountains, and more). These tickets must be purchased online through our website, on average, two months in advance.

At the entrance to Machu Picchu,
you will need to present your printed Machu Picchu ticket along with the document you used to make your reservation (ID, passport). Students will need to present their current university ID.

Huchuy Picchu

Catriel V.By: Catriel V.

“Machu Picchu A place for everyone“

“The hike to Huchuy Picchu mountain turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. However, do not be overconfident. The paths are narrow and you have to be careful. The reward is an amazing view, full of wonderful scenery. I wish everyone could visit this mountain, even once in their lifetime. I highly recommend it.“
