The Inca city of Machu Picchu was built in the middle of a cloud forest around the 15th century. This ancient Inca city is home to some of the most incredible structures in existence such as the Temple of the 3 windows, the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun or the Temple of the Moon. The latter is known as ‘The hidden jewel of Machupicchu’.

Temple of the Moon – Machu Pichu
Temple of the Moon – Machu Pichu

The Temple of the Moon, also known as the Great cavern is considered as ‘The hidden jewel of Machu Picchu’ due to the difficulty of getting there. Tourists who dare to climb Huayna Picchu and take the detour to this construction, will be almost alone with this mysterious temple.

What is the Temple of the Moon?

  • The Great Cavern (popularly called ‘Temple of the Moon’) is one of the most incredible constructions inside Machu Picchu.
  • It is built inside a natural cave. It has finely carved lithic structures.
  • The Incas had an admiration for the caves as they believed they could connect them with the world of the dead.
  • In the center of the Temple of the Moon there is a surface like a throne. Some researchers suggest that sacrifices could have been made there.
  • There is no clear idea of what was the function of the Temple of the Moon.
  • The way to get to this site is by acquiring your Machu Picchu + Temple of the Moon or Great Cavern (Route 3C) ticket. Keep in mind that it can only be purchased during the high season.

The official high season
The latest ticket updates and modifications incorporated the official high season. This season will begin on June 19 and run until November 2. Only during this period of time you can purchase the Machu Picchu + Temple of the Moon or Great Cavern (Route 3C) ticket. During the Regular Season or the rest of the year you will not be able to make the trip to this destination.

Where is it?

  • The Temple of the Moon at the back of Huayna Picchu. It is located almost 1 kilometer from the top of the mountain.
  • The summit of Huaynapicchu is at 2,720 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.) while the great cavern is at 2,256 (m.a.s.l.).
  • The Temple of the Moon is in a little known sector of Huaynapicchu. Almost no tourists descend to this place because of the remoteness of its location.
  • The Temple of the Moon is inside a natural cave.

How to get there?

  • This route can only be done during high season and with the ‘Machu Picchu + Temple of the Moon or Great Cave (Route 3C)’ ticket.
  • To get there, you have to take a detour on the way to the top of Huayna Picchu. The walking time is approximately 1 hour to 30 minutes.
  • The stretch to the Temple of the Moon is downhill by stone steps, and even an obstacle made of wooden stairs.
  • After visiting the Great cavern, you must return to the exit door of Huayna Picchu. During this stretch you must climb several stone steps until you find the same path by which you ascended.
  • You will only be able to do the route to the Temple of the Moon, you will not be able to follow the trail to Huayna Picchu or Huchuy Picchu.

Temple of the Moon or Great Cavern?

  • The name ‘Great cavern’ was given by the American explorer Hiram Bingham during the discovery of Machu Picchu in 1911.
  • After many years, the name ‘Temple of the Moon’ gained popularity among archaeologists, tour guides and visitors.
  • Therefore, there is no relation between the moon and this Inca construction. The name originated from a commercial idea created by the local inhabitants.
  • The more appropriate name for this construction is the ‘Great cavern’.

This is the hike

  • The hike includes part of the Qhapac Ñam or Inca Trail. The hike is downhill through the abundant vegetation.
  • The trail is varied, you can find stretches of stairs, wooden steps and also of trail. Remember to do the hike with due care.
  • The trail runs along narrow stone paths so it is recommended to have both hands to hold on. There is also a flight of wooden stairs that require a lot of care.
  • Once in the Great cavern you must ascend a series of stone stairs for about 1 hour (1.5 kilometers) to the exit door of Huayna Picchu. This section is one of the most difficult due to the elevation between each staircase.

Details of the hike

The hike to the Temple of the Moon is impressive. You cross the stairs of death and other trails next to huge cliffs. To climb up to The Great Cavern you must follow a moderate to difficult hiking route.

“Machu Picchu and its charms“

“There is so much to see in Machu Picchu that I don't think even staying a whole week would be enough. I was delighted, the whole experience is beautiful, from Cusco, the train ride, the Sacred Valley of the Incas and its beautiful villages and obviously Machu Picchu. The adventure of climbing its mountain was one of the best and not to mention the stone city itself. I would come back many more times as one day is not enough to see all this wonder.“

Descending the stairs of death
Descending the stairs of death

What are the Stairs of Death like?
They are steps that give the impression of being over the abysses that are produced by the altitude of Huayna Picchu. The Stairs of Death are a section of narrow steps that in some cases do not have a point of support for the hands. Therefore, sometimes you have to climb very carefully. However, it is a short section and quite safe to do due to the solidity of the rocks and the space that you have to take each step.

How difficult is the hike to Huayna Picchu?

  • Achieving the climb requires a walk of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • Although the trails seem dangerous, the truth is that they are wide and one can always hike along the mountain and not on the cliffs.
  • The difficulty of the hike to Huayna Picchu is medium/moderate.
  • One thing that can make the walk difficult is that it is completely uphill. In many sections you can find large steps.
  • Before taking the walk, it is recommended to arrive at the archaeological site on the ecological buses.
  • Similarly, following the previous point, it is often more advisable to spend the night in Aguas Calientes or Machu Pichu Pueblo.
  • Another detail that may seem like a difficulty is that it is not highly recommended for people with fear of heights or acrophobia.
  • It is also important that if you are over 50 years old, you consult with your doctor about your intentions for hiking to Huayna Picchu.
  • One recommendation is to also prepare yourself physically in case you do not have regular physical activity. This trip should be enjoyed and not suffered.

“Great experience!“

“It is not as difficult as many people say in many travel forums, it is a great experience, but it is not for everyone. We knew this because while we were ascending (my brother and I) we saw how some security agents had to escort a woman of about 45 years old with help, because I cannot stand vertigo, but we also saw children of just over 11 years old, at the top, so it has nothing to do with age or physique.“

It is not possible to be sure what the weather will be like on a particular day; it is unpredictable, since the sanctuary is located at just over 2,000 m.a.s.l. between a snow-capped mountain range and the Amazon jungle. This means that there can be sudden changes.

It can quickly change from cloudy skies to totally clear skies with moments of strong sunshine and strong winds, in addition to the inclement weather coming from the Amazon basin, with humidity and very heavy rains or intermittent drizzle. It is not unusual to be able to enjoy several seasons in the same day, since the weather in Huayna Picchu is determined by the mixture between the highlands, the cold winds of the mountain range and the warm humidity coming from the rainforest.

What is the temperature of Huayna Picchu?

Maximum temperatures range from 19º C to 21º C, and minimum temperatures from 8º C to 11º C. However, in the higher altitude areas, temperatures can drop to 0º C on the coldest nights.

Rainy season

The rainy season coincides with the low season for tourism in Machu Picchu. It includes the months of November to March. It has a temperate climate during the day with temperatures ranging between 19º and 21º C, which can drop to 8º C at night. There are days with plenty of sunshine and strong radiation, with temperatures that can reach up to 20º C. However, there are also cloudy and rainy days, especially in December and January.

The weather at night is mild with an average temperature of 8° C, unless it rains during the day, which could cause the temperature to drop to 0° C. If you visit at this time of year, waterproof clothing and/or an umbrella, hiking boots that allow you to walk on the slippery and wet surfaces are essential, as well as sunscreen for times of intense radiation.

Which entrance group to choose? In these months we recommend you to choose the second group to Huayna Picchu with the entrance time to the mountain from 10:30 to 11:30 am. In the rainy season, the whole sanctuary usually dawns covered with clouds, so the visibility at the top is quite limited, which will prevent you from getting good panoramic views of the city of Machu Picchu. But the clouds dissipate as the hours go by.

Dry season

The dry season coincides with the high season of tourism in Machu Picchu. It occurs between the months of April to October; with maximum temperatures of 21º C during the day and 10º C at night; it is a time with very sunny days and temperate air, the vegetation of the area shows its best green tone of the whole year, with flowers everywhere, which contributes to the abundance of insects. It is also a time of frost and cold, being more intense in the months of May and June.

Also at this time of the year, August is characterized by strong winds and higher solar radiation, with 21º C during the day and an intense cold at night that drops to 0º C. It is advisable to use sunscreen at all times, as the cold at night also burns the skin.
